Crayfish road show for schools

Now fully booked for 2012-13

Bringing Bristol Zoo to schools, the Crayfish in Crisis road show highlights freshwater ecology and conservation with a focus on the plight of our native white-clawed crayfish, an endangered species which Bristol Zoo is working hard to conserve as part of the Crayfish in Crisis Project.

An innovative, 3D display will be created within the school grounds, to immerse students in the experience. Sessions are available in 1or 2 hour slots, with the option of having the road show visit for one session only or for a whole day, enabling numerous classes to rotate through and experience the session. Assembly presentations may be available on request.

The road show is designed to be an interactive experience, incorporating a selection of games, crafts, activities and props such as models, crayfish moults and costumes. Live crayfish and/or aquatic macro-invertebrates can be incorporated into sessions, where appropriate.

Prices

These sessions are free of charge, thanks to generous funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). These sessions will run for the 2012/13 period; however, places are limited.

Class size

There is a maximum class size of 30 for students KS1 – KS4. A teacher from the school must be present at all times.

Availability

These sessions are available to schools from September 2012 – August 2013. Please book well in advance as spaces are limited.

Crayfish in Crisis Project

The South West Crayfish Partnership (SWCP)*was established in 2008, in response to a dramatic 70% decline in native white-clawed crayfish populations in SW England. New funding in 2012 has enabled the SWCP to create the Crayfish in Crisis project. Money from the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled Bristol Zoo Gardens and its sister organisation Bristol Conservation and Science Foundation to bring the innovative Crayfish in Crisis Road Show to schools for free, although spaces are limited.  For more information on the SWCP and the Crayfish in Crisis Project click here or email our UK Conservation and Communication Officer: mivey@bristolzoo.org.uk
